[Burma photograph album] [ca. 1889]

The primary focus of the album of 41 albumen prints and four cyanotypes is the British experience in Burma (Myanmar). Compiled by a Lieutenant Atkinson, a British officer stationed in Rangoon or Mandalay, it documents the country's early milestones as a province of British India such as the visit of Prince Albert Victor in December 1889, as well as the military and personal life of the compiler. Although the album does not include any images of Prince Albert Victor himself, his visit is recorded in several images of his military escort as well as in views of the poway (pwe) dances that were staged for him. A number of images, such as that of a tree under which King Mindoon Min purportedly signed a treaty with the British, images of dacoits or rebels, and the jail at Myngyan, reference key events in the colonization process. Of particular note is a portrait of Sir George Stuart White, a brigadier during the Third Anglo-Burmese War (1885), who was knighted for subduing the dacoits. Photographs of Atkinson's personal life appear in the second half of the album and include five images of his prize horses, three images of him with friends, and a view of his home. Views of Burma and Burmese people, such as portraits of women from the Kachin ethnic group, children, typical beauties, and dancers are also included in the album. Recent Burmese history is recorded in a postmortem photograph of an elderly man who may have been one of the royal princes executed by order Hsinbyumashin, Mindon's queen, in order to clear the throne for her son-in law Thibaw; and in a group portrait of King Thibaw Min, Queen Supayalat, and her sister Supayaji. There is also one loose hand-colored studio portrait of a Burmese chieftain identified as Mounay Pokhar.

1 album (45 photographic prints) : albumen, cynaotype ; album 31 x 43 cm. + 1 hand-colored photographic print.
